Happiest of Birthdays | Masked Background

Happiest of Birthdays | Masking Backgrounds

Hello my stamping friends.

Okay, so I don’t often use masking in my card making, but recently I did a week long Featured Stamping segment on creating backgrounds for my Demo Group.  So today’s projects share two of those background ideas with us, and feature the Butterflies & Flowers Layering Masks from the Spring Catalog.  I really had a lot of fun using them, so please watch the full  Show & Tell Demonstration to see it all come together.

Paper, Ink, and Masks, oh my!  So what do you think, might you use masks in a future project? Leave me a comment, let me know which technique you liked the best.

If you need a list of supplies or the written instructions, they are here as well.  Just keep scrolling to find all the details.

Happy Stampin,

Project Instructions:

  1. Cut a 11” x 8 ½” piece of Gorgeous Grape cardstock. Score at 5 ½”. Fold in half to form a card base. Burnish crease using a Bone Folder.

  2. Cut a piece of Highland Heather cardstock to measure 4” x 5 ¼”.

  3. Cut a piece of Basic White cardstock 5” x 3 ¾”.

  4. Die-cut a 5 x 3 ½”  piece of Vellum Cardstock with the Ornate Layers Dies for the sentiment layer. Stamp with Gorgeous Grape ink the sentiment from Happiest of Birthdays in the center. Let this layer dry!

  5. Now with the masks of the butterfly images, both open and detailed, let’s sponge some background images onto our Basic White panel.

    1. Start with Pale Papaya in the center with the open mask.  Sponge some color to fill the area.  Hold the mask in place firmly to keep a nice edge to the image.

    2. Now replace the open mask with the detailed on, and sponge with the Pumpkin Pie ink over the top.

    3. Repeat in a new area with Blushing Bride | Polished Pink.

    4. Repeat again with Highland Heather | Gorgeous Grape.

  6. Now adhere the three cardstock layers to form the card front,

  7. With the multi-purpose adhesive, add the vellum layer over the top.

  8. Add some pearls for embellishment.

  1. Cut a 11” x 8 ½” piece of Pale Papaya cardstock. Score at 5 ½”. Fold in half to form a card base. Burnish crease using a Bone Folder.

  2. Cut a piece of Basic White cardstock 5” x 3 ¾”.

  3. Die-cut a 2” x 5 ½”  piece of Basic White cardstock with the Ornate Layers Dies for the sentiment layer. Stamp the sentiment from Happiest of Birthdays, with Pumpkin Pie ink at the end of the tag.

  4. Now with the mask of the daisy pattern images, we are going to color the background.  Use the lines of the mask to help you segment your cardstock for the three colors.

    1. Start with Pale Papaya ink at the bottom color of the cardstock.  Use the Sponge Dauber to apply ink from the color to near the center.

    2. Now switch and sponge on Blushing Bride ink for another three lines.

    3. Switch again and use Highland Heather ink to complete the upper corner.

  5. Now with the sentiment stamp and Pale Papaya ink, stamp the sentiment again, repeatedly along the angle lines of the background you just sponged.

  6. Cut two lengths of the Pale Papaya ribbon and wrap and adhere them to the back of the panel.

  7. Now add that panel to the card front with Dimensionals.

  8. Trim down the sentiment  tag to fit your card and adhere as well.

  9. For a little sparkle you could add some Iridescent Rhinestones.
